I passed the PSPO I exam with 97.5% on my first try, here’s how you can do better with what I’ve learnt

Hi there, certified Product Owner and all round great guy (according to gram gram) Daniel of The World of Product here and I wrote and passed the PSPO I certification exam and came out with a fairly good score of 97.5%

While I was satisfied with the end result, I wasn’t satisfied with the preparation process, I had put in unnecessary work into unnecessary things and with what I learnt from the experience,

I could easily bag a 100% with the right approach and today, I’m going to share some of what I learnt with you, my friend.

So sit back and get ready to stand out from the candidate crowd.

1. First, CAREFUL with modal verbs

Here's the first one and really important one, know what may, what must, could, should, would occur during the execution of Scrum. These will draw a fine line when you are actively working the field because due to the Agile nature of Scrum, you are potentially going to make certain tradeoffs and you must ensure that you and your team stay true to the principles of Scrum. The same goes for the exam and it could be the deciding factor on whether you finish even stronger than I did or have a less, much less satisfactory finish.

2. Bookmark, BOOKMARK, BOOKMARK!

Hear me out, a review of your answers before final submission is CRITICAL to success, when dealing with a collection of 80 questions in 60 minutes, you really do not want to waste anytime, looking for questions that you weren't sure of on your first transversal, you will do yourself the world of good in terms of time and brain power by bookmarking EVERY question you either couldn't answer in the moment or haven't been answered with all assurance. This way you can easily focus squarely on answering the questions and thinking about what you might have forgotten.

3. Cut your loading time with a strong connection

Loading time per question from our survey of past candidates averages at 4 seconds per question. That's a whopping 4 minutes of load time! Here, the margins can tip things in your favor or otherwise. Candidates that reported to have strong connections saw an average of 1.4 seconds for a question, that saved them almost three minutes that could be used to answer a couple questions better. So make sure your internet connection is top-notch before you begin, a bad connection will eat up your precious time and mess up your rhythm. Personally, my connection was average and I experienced around 2 seconds of delay but in real time, I would have loved something quicker to really keep the exam flowing.

4.  A guide in hand is worth ten during preparation

No, it isn't against the rules. However, it can eat up a chunk of your time trying to find something to help with a particular question, with the time optimizing strategies already discussed, you should have just enough time to glance through for 1-3 questions. Note, you cannot go over the standard study material as they are just too cumbersome for this fast-paced moment, you will need something that's comprehensive, straight to the point, good for personal study as well as a helping hand during the exam and we, at The World of Product, have got you covered, cause hey, what are friends for! (More on that later)

5. Familiarize yourself with questions tailored to the exam

While Scrum teaches you about the practice of a proper Product Owner in a Scrum environment, passes this exam is your primary focus and you should walk in that light. This includes answering questions that are identical to those you will find in this exam, NOT generic questions about being a Product Owner. Some concepts might not be germane to the PSPO I exam, there are question patterns  and structure, areas of concentration among others to which you have to be privy in order to be properly acclimated and familiarized with the PSPO I exam.

6. Stand on the shoulder of successful giants, see the whole PSPO I world

Mix and communicate with those that have been there and done it, they are your BEST bet to understanding what exactly lies ahead of you so their insight is invaluable.

And there you have it, some tips and tricks that you will give you a boost in your preparedness for the PSPO I exam. Wish I knew these things, I would have had a far more efficient approach to my preparation but I guess that would be coming in my next certification!

If you’ll like to know ALL I learnt as well as the experience of dozens of successful exam candidates-  including specific topics to study, broken down in a manner than can be translated easily into the exam setting (Hint: point number 2), as well as questions and answers curated from what we actually SAW in the exam and questions created with topics that were observed to ensure you KNOW what to expect and pass with EASE.
